No problem. I wanted the list myself so I figured I'd put it out there for everyone. I had some ideas on how to make these sorts of lists easier in the future. I'd like some input if you are interested in talking about it.

Good luck with all your goals, Luke. It sounds like you have a lot planned for the year. I Wouldn't worry too much about your name being out there on the web. I'm a quiet guy myself, but the more you are seen, the more people will approach you and start conversations about the topics you love. It's nice to see that there are so many people out there with similar interests who want to help each other out.

ANd for doing programming, have you tried freelance websites? There are a lot of them that offer jobs in almost anything computer related. I do graphics and logos and stuff all the time through odesk.com and it works out pretty well.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Luke - don't be afraid to link your name to your content - just be conscious of what you post and how it may affect your goals. I completely understand your apprehension; I think too many people don't think at all about the impact social networking may have on their career / career search. However, don't let it hold you back either.
Good luck achieving your goals! And if you need any advice or site recommendations for programming, or just are looking for people to network with I have a friend who is a web developer and is amazing at what he does. He is also very friendly and generally willing to help others so I'd be happy to put the two of you in touch.

Ellen,

I joined the book club but likely won't make it until next month. I'm taking an Italian class through UW extension on Tuesday nights right now and it gets done towards the end of the month. After that Tuesdays will be a good night again.

Hey Adam,

Thanks for the comment. It is true that it is possible to create a good atmosphere on a small team while other parts of a large company might not be as good to work for. I had something similar happen to me. My immediate boss would go to the mat to fight for me, but the next tier and surrounding management wasn't as supportive. My boss's support kept me in my job for probably a year longer than I would have lasted without.

It sounds like, if you take a little while to think about it, your boss and his boss have both won a certain amount of loyalty from you already. That's what a good manager does, that's what in the end large companies as a whole will have to do to keep young workers at a higher rate.

Here's something I found interesting. Companies that took measure to help employees in the recession.
http://bit.ly/bO892s

I was going to link back to your own post on Gen-Y in the workplace until I linked your name. Your line about layoffs and that "Eventually it will happen to us all" really struck me. That really gets to what I was trying to say. Until companies change that mentality to just accept the layoffs then our generation won't stick with the companies.

Thanks for making me think back through this. I see the slightly different viewpoint that you were taking in your post. It is interesting and will make me think a bit more now.

Hey Luke,

Kudos to you on your goals for this month!! Swimming is something I used to love to do but haven't for a long time - it's one of my goals to get back into it. I finally joined a gym and once I'm back in Madison plan on getting to work asap.

I saw that you joined the book club group - are you planning on coming to our meetups??

I move all the time, so usually I just need one really big reason: job, friends, education, etc. I'm pretty much willing to give most places a chance. I did find though, being in MN for the first time, I am totally a coastal person. I've never lived in the midwest, and I don't think I'm really suited for it. I will eventually head back to a coast, but I am open to new places in between. The biggest thing: I want a network. So if you are going to move, get connected through twitter/brazen/whichever so you aren't without knowing anyone. Good luck!
